What is confirmation?
Confirmation is a religious rite of passage in many Christian denominations, including the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. It is typically celebrated when a young person reaches the age of around 14-16 years old and is seen as a way of affirming one's faith and commitment to the church.
History:
The history of Confirmation can be traced back to the early Christian Church, where it was originally part of the same ritual as baptism. However, as the Church grew and spread, the two sacraments were separated, with Confirmation becoming a distinct ceremony that was often performed by a bishop.
Traditions:
The traditions associated with Confirmation can vary between denominations, but generally involve a period of preparation and instruction for the young person who will be confirmed. This may involve attending classes or retreats, as well as participating in service projects or other activities that emphasize the importance of faith and community.
The actual Confirmation ceremony often includes the laying on of hands by the bishop or other religious leader, as well as the anointing with chrism oil. The confirmand (the person being confirmed) will typically recite a series of vows, affirming their faith and commitment to the church.
Celebration process:
After the Confirmation ceremony, it is common for families and friends to gather together to celebrate with a special meal or party. Gifts are often given to the confirmand, such as religious items or symbolic keepsakes.
Child and confirmation:
In addition to the religious significance of Confirmation, it can also be seen as an important milestone in a young person's life. It marks a transition from childhood to adolescence, and can be a time for reflection and self-discovery. It is a chance to celebrate one's identity and beliefs, and to connect with a community of like-minded individuals who share similar values and aspirations.
Confirmation tradition in Scandinavian countries:
In Scandinavia, Confirmation is an important event in many Christian families, particularly in the Lutheran Church. In Norway, Sweden, and Finland, Confirmation is typically celebrated when a young person is around 15-16 years old, although the exact age can vary depending on the individual church.
The process of preparing for Confirmation in Scandinavia often involves attending confirmation classes or camps, where young people learn about the Christian faith and the teachings of the Lutheran Church. These classes may also include practical instruction on topics such as ethics, personal development, and social responsibility.
The Confirmation ceremony itself typically takes place in the local church, and is presided over by the pastor or bishop. The confirmands wear formal clothing and often carry candles or other symbolic items as part of the ceremony. The pastor or bishop will deliver a sermon or message, and the confirmands will recite their vows of faith and commitment to the church.
Ecclesiastical confirmation is in the word (to confirm/confirmare). You confirm the baptismal vow. Confirmators undergo a confirmation course through the church and they often go to confirmation camps. They don't just learn about Bible stories, but also a lot of other things and that marks the transition from child to adult. Afterwards, the actual confirmation is held solemnly in the church and afterwards a confirmation is held where the child is welcomed into the ranks of the adults. Here the extended family gathers and dinner, dessert, coffee and cakes are served and the child often receives expensive and fine gifts. There are sometimes quite expensive gifts too!
In some Scandinavian countries, such as Sweden and Denmark, Confirmation is also seen as a cultural event, and may be celebrated by families who are not particularly religious. In these cases, the focus is often more on the coming-of-age aspect of the ceremony, rather than the religious significance.
My hobby is to write poems, since 2008 I have always wished to publish poems and share my creative work with the world. I take inspiration from a variety of sources, including nature, art, and human emotion. I believe that poetry has the power to heal, inspire, and transform, and it is my goal to create works that do just that.
